Luke 3:7-18
Defiant Joy

Rev. Beth Simmons preaches on Luke 3:7-18 and Mary Oliver's poem, "Don't Hesitate."

Apologies that the camera battery died 3/4 of the way through so the ending of the sermon was not recorded!

Basically, the summary was that if we find and make joy, including following what John and the early Christian community in Acts did as far as sharing resources with each other, we will be resisting the oppressive powers. Rev. Beth also challenged the congregation to create a list/litany of joy: one thing that brings us joy for each year that we have been alive, and then meditate on it at least until Christmas, even better through Epiphany. The last line was, "Joy was not made to be a crumb...you brood of vipers!"

Video description: Rev. Beth, a White woman with short wavy brown hair and glasses, wears a fitted and embroidered black robe with a purple stole. The stole includes images of a path, a very pregnant Mary, and the Hebrew word "hineni." Her pink pants peek out from the bottom of her robe. She stands in front of the Communion table and altar and moves around as she preaches.
